Today, an undentified source, a nurse who currently lives and works in Ghana, stated, "...and for the past four months i have not seen any salary...this makes things much worst for me..." When asked by Dance4One owner and blogger, Dan Getz, "Why are they not paying you?" the nurse replied, "...that is from the government...things are not good here as compare to that of your place or europe...things here are so different...".
When further questioned, "How do you pay your rent and other obligations??", the unidentified nurse currently employed by the Ghana Ministry of Health stated, "...well i have been having problems with so many things...just trying to keep all this by myself...i am currently having problems with the owner of my apartment and my bills as well..."
This is not a new thing for Ghana. In 2009, the Health Ministry of Ghana ordered the payment of nurses salaries that were five years in arrears. Quoting directly from this article (http://www.ghanabusinessnews.com/2009/08/07/health-ministry-orders-payment-of-nurses%E2%80%99-salary-arrears/. ),
"Dr. George Sipa-Adjah Yankey, the Minister of Health, said it was pathetic that some nurses and other health workers had not received their salaries for the past five years." In a more recent article that confirms and explains the primary reason the Ghana Ministry of Health, or more accurately the HIPC (Heavily Indebted Poor Countries, see http://www.imf.org/external/pubs/ft/scr/2004/cr04209.pdf) fund is unable to pay it's nurses, and multiple statutory funds (including the Health Fund, District Assemblies' Common Fund, and the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund)), the writer stated today, September 18, 2013, that "Parliament will meet Finance Minister, Seth Terkper and officials from the Controller and Accountant General Department (CAGD) to discuss government's freeze on their HIPC accounts and its failure to make payments into various statutory funds."
