“President Obama’s announcement of Osama bin Laden’s death was watched by 56.5 million people in the United States on Sunday night, the Nielsen Company said Tuesday.
The nine-minute address to the nation appeared to be the most watched presidential speech in nearly a decade. Despite the fact that the announcement came at , well after many people might go to bed, it drew more viewers than every other address Mr. Obama has given as president.
The high ratings are a testament to the intense public interest in information about the killing of Bin Laden. News Web sites have reported robust traffic; MSNBC.com, for instance, said it served 22 million video streams on Monday, it’s second highest one-day total.
Many Americans were alerted to the president’s impending speech by the major television networks, which reported Bin Laden’s death around , and by social networking Web sites. Nielsen said the 56.5 million viewer figure was the sum of nine network’s audiences.
For the sake of comparison, most State of the Union addresses garner 35 million to 55 million viewers. Mr. Obama’s address about Libya in March averaged 26 million viewers.
A review of Nielsen data suggested that only one address by Mr. Obama had more viewers than the one on Sunday – and that came even later at night, at , after he won the 2008 election.
Only one State of the Union address by President George W. Bush drew more viewers than Sunday’s announcement; that was the address in 2003, as war in Iraq loomed and 62 million viewers tuned in.”

Brian, I do have one question…Why do you start out the article with “The nine-minute address to the nation appeared to be the most watched presidential speech in nearly a decade. Despite the fact that the announcement came at 11:35 p.m., well after many people might go to bed, it drew more viewers than every other address Mr. Obama has given as president,” and then close the article with a statement that Nielsen data DID reflect a president’s (George W. Bush) speech from 11 years ago (albeit this is technically outside the “decade” timeframe used at the beginning of the article) that DID attract MORE viewers (62 million) AND a statement that Obama’s acceptance speech (i.e. technically BEFORE he became PRESIDENT) ALSO drew more viewers than the Sunday May 1st announcement by President Obama’s of Bin Laden’s death? Is there a reason you felt it necessary to make this story more sensational than it already was? I’m just saying, Brian, that when you spend more time, in my opinion, weakening the opening statement, than you do on the opening statement, it at least makes people (like me) wonder what you and our often liberal and biased media are up to…
